There is something incredibly special about photographing someone you’ve known for most of your life.

This session, held in beautiful Maitland, wasn’t just another booking for me. It was deeply personal. I had the honour of photographing my oldest friend as she stepped into motherhood for the very first time, capturing those quiet, tender newborn moments with her baby boy. And then, nine months later, I found myself behind the camera again, documenting a completely different chapter of her story – her very first Mother’s Day.

And wow… what a transformation.

Watching motherhood unfold

When I photographed her newborn session, everything was new. There was a softness, a learning curve, a quiet adjustment as she found her rhythm as a mum. Those early days are slow, hazy, and fleeting all at once.

Fast forward nine months, and I witnessed something truly beautiful.

Confidence. Connection. Ease.

She wasn’t just a new mum anymore – she had grown into motherhood. The way she held her little boy, the way he looked at her, the way they moved together so naturally… it was effortless and deeply connected.

This is why motherhood photography matters so much.

Because it doesn’t stay the same.

Why capturing different stages of motherhood is so important

Motherhood isn’t one moment. It’s a story that unfolds in chapters.

The newborn stage is just the beginning. Then comes the smiles, the giggles, the personality, the bond that deepens in ways you can’t quite explain unless you’ve lived it.

And the truth is – it all moves so quickly.

One minute you’re holding a tiny newborn in your arms, and the next you’re chasing a giggling baby who reaches for you with complete trust and love.

Capturing these stages means you don’t lose them.

You get to hold onto the feeling of each season – not just in your memory, but in something you can see, touch, and revisit forever.

A full circle moment in Maitland

What made this session even more meaningful was having her parents there.

These are people I’ve known for just as long. People I’ve grown up around. People I adore.

Watching them with her, and with their grandson, was one of those full-circle moments that quietly hits you in the heart.

They weren’t just grandparents.

They were watching their daughter become a mother.

There was pride, love, a little bit of disbelief at how quickly time has passed… and so much joy.

Capturing those in-between moments – the glances, the smiles, the way they held him – felt just as important as the motherhood images themselves.

Because motherhood doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s held, supported, and witnessed by the people who came before us.

More than just photos

These weren’t just photos.

They were a story of transition. Growth. Legacy.

From newborn cuddles to confident motherhood.

From daughter to mother.

From parents to grandparents.

This is why I will always encourage families to document more than just the “big milestones”.

Because the in-between moments?

They’re often the ones that mean the most.

Thinking about your own motherhood session?

If you’re based in Maitland or the surrounding Hunter Valley area and have been thinking about documenting your own motherhood journey, this is your gentle reminder.

You don’t need a “perfect” moment.

You don’t need a special occasion.

You just need now.

Because one day, this version of your life – exactly as it is – will be the moment you wish you could step back into.

If you’d love to capture your own motherhood story, I would be so honoured to document it for you.
